Home Care Nevada Counties: 6 Have None
By Nicolas Sartor · 2026-09-17 · Updated 2026-09-18
Six Nevada counties, Esmeralda, Eureka, Lander, Lincoln, Pershing, and Storey, have no licensed home care agencies headquartered within their borders as of September 18, 2026, out of 17 county-level jurisdictions statewide. Clark and Washoe counties alone hold 704 of Nevada’s 723 licensed agencies, 97.4% of the total, leaving these six without a single local provider and families there dependent on agencies based elsewhere.
Where home care agencies concentrate across Nevada counties
Nevada’s 723 licensed home care agencies spread unevenly across 17 county-level jurisdictions (16 counties plus Carson City). Only 11 of those 17 have even one licensed agency headquartered inside them, and the distances families drive for care track that split closely.

Population concentration explains the pattern. Outside Clark and Washoe, just 18 agencies are headquartered anywhere in the state, spread across nine jurisdictions from Carson City to Elko. One more holds a Nevada license from an address just over the California border, with no Nevada county of record.
Every county total below is NevadaList’s own tally of the HCQC licensing export, matched to each agency’s address of record. HCQC publishes the license records; the county-by-county count is ours.
The 6 counties with zero licensed agencies
Esmeralda, Eureka, Lander, Lincoln, Pershing, and Storey counties currently have no licensed home care agencies based within their boundaries. Douglas County was on this list until September 18, 2026, when NevadaList’s count began treating Barton Home Health Agency’s Stateline license as its own record instead of folding it into the same agency’s South Lake Tahoe, California license. That office is on the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe, and it is the only licensed home care address in Douglas County. Not having one does not mean residents cannot access care; it means agencies serving them operate from neighboring hubs instead.
Lyon County sits one license above that line. Its single agency is in Fernley, and it is the only licensed home care address anywhere in Lyon, which is why a family in Yerington, the county seat, is making the same out-of-town calls a Storey County family makes.
Families in the six should expect to call providers based elsewhere and ask about their service territory. An agency headquartered in Carson City or Reno may still serve parts of Storey or Lyon, for example, but only that agency can tell you where its territory actually ends.
Where Nevada’s licensed agencies are actually based
Clark County alone holds 659 licensed agencies, 91.1% of the state total. Washoe County, the next largest, holds 45. Every other Nevada jurisdiction combined holds 18, and the 723rd license is the California-border one with no Nevada county attached.
Those 18 distribute across nine smaller jurisdictions:
| Jurisdiction | Licensed Agencies |
|---|---|
| Carson City | 6 |
| Nye | 3 |
| Elko | 3 |
| Churchill | 1 |
| Douglas | 1 |
| Humboldt | 1 |
| Lyon | 1 |
| Mineral | 1 |
| White Pine | 1 |
As of September 18, 2026
Las Vegas houses 569 of Clark County’s 659 agencies, with Henderson adding 53 more. In Washoe County, Reno claims 40 of the county’s 45 licensed providers.
Rural Nevada home care options for families
Rural Nevada home care searches take more legwork than urban ones, because the list of agencies to call is so short: 18 across every jurisdiction outside Clark and Washoe. Start with the nearest city that has a licensed presence, usually Reno for the northern counties, Las Vegas for the southern ones, or Carson City’s six agencies for the center of the state. Nevada’s smallest home care markets covers what those short lists look like town by town.
Whether an agency reaches your address is its own decision, not something the license record settles, so ask where the boundary sits before assuming.

What to do when your county has no provider
Contact several neighboring-county agencies in the same week rather than one at a time, and end each call with two answers: does the agency cover your address, and does it add a travel fee to get there. With 18 licensed agencies to choose from outside Clark and Washoe, the list runs out fast enough that working it in parallel is worth the afternoon.
Distance also changes when care can start, not just how it arrives. Before Medicare will pay a Nevada home health agency for skilled nursing or therapy visits, it requires that a doctor or other provider, such as a nurse practitioner, see the patient in person and confirm the need, so a family in Esmeralda or Lincoln County has that appointment to arrange before an agency call is worth making.
Sort out early which category you actually need, since personal care and home health are separate Nevada licenses with separate agency lists. Calling every provider in the nearest city is slow enough without spending half those calls on the wrong license type.
For complaints or concerns about care quality, the Nevada Health Care Quality and Compliance (HCQC) is the entry point for a complaint, and it regulates all 723 licensed providers regardless of which county they serve.
The Medicare point above describes how the home health benefit generally works; it is not medical or benefits advice for your specific situation. Confirm current rules at Medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.
Common questions
Does having zero licensed agencies mean those counties cannot access home care?
No. The count is of where agencies are headquartered. An HCQC license record lists an address and a county, not a service territory, so the record alone cannot tell you whether a Carson City or Reno agency will take a client in Storey or Pershing County. Only the agency can, which is why the first call is to ask.
Which six Nevada counties have no licensed home care agencies?
Esmeralda, Eureka, Lander, Lincoln, Pershing, and Storey counties have no licensed agencies headquartered within their borders as of September 18, 2026. Douglas County came off that list the same day, when NevadaList's count began treating Barton Home Health Agency's Stateline license as its own record rather than part of the agency's South Lake Tahoe one. Lyon County came close: its one licensed agency sits in Fernley.
How should families in counties without local agencies find care?
Work the whole short list at once. Outside Clark and Washoe there are 18 licensed agencies in nine jurisdictions, and only Carson City (6), Nye (3), and Elko (3) have more than one; the rest are one-agency towns: Winnemucca, Fallon, Ely, Hawthorne, Fernley, and Stateline. Call the two or three closest to you on the same day, and ask each whether it takes clients at your address.
Do agencies charge travel fees to serve counties where they are not based?
The license record does not say. HCQC's export lists each agency's address, phone, category, endorsements, and status, and nothing about service radius or mileage charges, so any travel fee is a question for the agency itself. Ask for it in writing alongside the hourly rate, and ask whether it changes for several visits a week or a live-in placement.
Does a rural family need a doctor visit before home health can start?
For Medicare-covered care, yes, and in person. Before Medicare pays for skilled nursing or therapy at home, a doctor or other provider such as a nurse practitioner must see the patient face to face and confirm the need for home health care, and a Medicare-certified agency must deliver it. That appointment comes before the agency search, in a county with a local agency or without one.
What should I verify when calling agencies from neighboring counties?
Start with the license. Ask for the agency's HCQC license number and category, then check both on the HCQC roster, because personal care and home health are separate licenses with separate agency lists. Ask whether the agency takes clients at your address and what that adds to the rate. For a home health need, ask whether its license lists the service you want.
