How Old Are Nevada's Home Care Licenses? A 2026 Tenure Snapshot
By Nicolas Sartor · 2026-09-16 · Updated 2026-09-18
231 of Nevada’s 723 licensed home care agencies, 32% of the total, were first licensed in just the last two years, while only 155 agencies, 21.4%, have held their license since before 2015, per the HCQC export of September 18, 2026. That growth has split unevenly: personal care agencies are entering faster than home health, and the state’s oldest active license, Renown Health Home Care in Reno, dates back to 1983, a quarter century before the oldest personal care license on the roster.
Nevada’s home care industry is getting younger, fast
Every record in the September 18, 2026 HCQC licensing export carries a first-issue date, which answers something the raw agency count can’t: how long has each of Nevada’s 723 licensed home care agencies actually been operating? Not long, for most of them. Over half the roster, 54.4%, was licensed within the last five years, and the two-year slice alone is 231 agencies. At the other end, the 155 agencies licensed before 2015 are barely a fifth of the 723.
Year-by-year, the growth is stark. Counted by first-issue date, the currently active roster holds between 9 and 34 licenses from each year of the 2010s, then 98 from 2024, 110 from 2025, and already 98 from the partial 2026 count captured here. That three-year stretch alone, 2024 through mid-September 2026, accounts for 306 of the state’s 723 active licenses, 42% of everything on the roster today. One caveat: the export lists only licenses still active, so older cohorts have had more years to close and the curve overstates the recent jump somewhat.

Personal care is driving the boom more than home health
The recent growth isn’t evenly split between Nevada’s two license categories. Of agencies licensed in the last two years, 153 hold personal-care licenses and 79 hold home-health licenses; one of them holds both, which is why those figures sum to one more than 231. As a share of each category, 34.7% of all personal-care agencies were licensed in just the last two years, compared to 25.8% of home-health agencies.
The roster doesn’t record why, but the entry rules fit the pattern. Nevada Administrative Code Chapter 449 asks a personal care attendant to be 18, able to communicate with clients, and to take at least 8 hours of training a year (NAC 449.3975), while every person delivering a home health service has to hold the professional license or certification that service requires (NAC 449.788). Opening a personal care agency is the shorter runway. See personal care vs. home health for what else separates the two categories.
Nevada’s longest-standing agencies
At the other end of the spectrum, 26 of Nevada’s currently licensed agencies have held their license for 20 years or more, all of them home-health agencies. Not one is personal-care-only, and the reason is the calendar rather than the category: Nevada’s personal care agency regulations took effect on January 30, 2008 (NAC 449.396 to 449.3982), the oldest personal care license on the roster dates from September 2008, and no personal care license can reach 20 years before 2028. The oldest currently active license in the state belongs to Renown Health Home Care in Reno, first licensed July 8, 1983 (43 years ago). Centerwell Home Health in Reno (1985) and Southwest Medical Associates Home Health in Las Vegas (1987) are the next-oldest still-active licenses.
License age varies sharply by city
The two largest markets outside Las Vegas sit at opposite ends of the maturity spectrum. In Henderson, 52.8% of the city’s 53 licensed agencies were first licensed in just the last two years, the youngest of the four large markets (North Las Vegas is next at 35.5%), with only 9 agencies (17%) predating 2015. Reno tells the opposite story: just 22.5% of its 40 agencies are that new, and 16 (40%) have held a license since before 2015, more than double Henderson’s veteran share. Las Vegas drives the most absolute growth of any market in the state: 178 new licenses in the last two years alone, more agencies than Reno’s entire roster.
That size-versus-tenure split holds up at the metro level too. Add Henderson’s 53 and North Las Vegas’s 31 to Las Vegas’s 569 and the southern metro accounts for 653 of Nevada’s 723 licensed agencies, roughly 90% of the state’s market; the Reno metro, counting Sparks, reaches 44. Las Vegas wins on every growth measure and Reno wins on tenure, but neither city’s market is really a fair size comparison to the other: Las Vegas and its suburbs are the state’s dominant market by a wide margin.
A newer license isn’t a red flag by itself: the whole Nevada industry is expanding, and every long-standing agency started somewhere. But license tenure is a real, checkable data point families can weigh alongside the standard questions about staffing and references: an agency licensed in the last few months has, by definition, no multi-year track record with Nevada regulators yet, while one licensed a decade or two ago has been through multiple renewal cycles.

Checking any agency’s license date
Every agency’s profile on the Nevada home care directory shows a “Licensed since” year alongside its current status. Cross-reference that date, along with license status and endorsements, directly with the Nevada Health Care Quality and Compliance before signing with any of the state’s 723 providers. This snapshot reflects a single point in time, and the roster changes as new agencies are licensed and others close or renew.
Common questions
Which Nevada home care license has been active the longest?
Renown Health Home Care in Reno holds the oldest currently active license, first issued in July 1983. The next-oldest are Centerwell Home Health in Reno from 1985 and Southwest Medical Associates Home Health in Las Vegas from 1987.
Why are personal care agencies growing faster than home health agencies in Nevada?
The roster records the gap, not the cause: 34.7% of personal care agencies were licensed in the last two years, against 25.8% of home health agencies. The entry rules differ in a way that fits it. A personal care attendant needs 8 hours of training a year under NAC 449.3975, while anyone delivering a home health service must hold the license or certification that service requires under NAC 449.788.
Which Nevada city has the newest home care market?
Henderson. More than half of its 53 licensed agencies, 52.8%, received their first license in just the last two years, against a statewide rate of 32%. No other city with more than a handful of agencies comes close; North Las Vegas is next at 35.5%.
How has Nevada's home care licensing pace changed since 2024?
Counting the licenses still active today by first-issue year, each year of the 2010s contributed between 9 and 34, then 2024 contributed 98, 2025 110, and 2026 another 98 by mid-September. Licenses from 2024 onward are 306 of the 723, 42% of the roster. Older cohorts have had longer to close, so the curve overstates the jump somewhat.
Does a newer license mean an agency is less reliable?
A recent license is not automatically a red flag; the entire industry is expanding. But license tenure is a checkable fact: an agency licensed a few months ago has no multi-year history with Nevada regulators yet, while one operating a decade or more has been through multiple renewal cycles.
How do Reno and Henderson compare in license age distribution?
They sit at opposite ends. Only 17% of Henderson's agencies predate 2015, against 40% in Reno, and Henderson added 52.8% of its roster in the last two years while Reno added 22.5%. Reno also holds the state's two oldest active licenses, from 1983 and 1985.
How does the whole Las Vegas metro compare to the whole Reno metro, not just the two core cities?
Add Henderson and North Las Vegas to Las Vegas and the southern metro reaches 653 of Nevada's 723 licensed agencies, about 90% of the state. Add Sparks to Reno and the northern metro reaches 44. Las Vegas wins on growth and Reno wins on tenure, but the two metros aren't close in size at all.
